Grenada Community Library welcomes JoJo and Gran Gran author Laura Henry-Allain MBE

Laura Henry-Allain MBE, award-winning global producer, storyteller, educationalist and consultant, recently visited the Grenada Community Library to lead reading and storytelling activities with local schoolchildren from St George’s and St Louis schools.

Laura shared stories from JoJo and Gran Gran, the award-winning series that inspired the characters developed by the BBC’s CBeebies, which has delighted audiences around the world. The series is based on the loving relationship Laura had with her own grandmother.

Laura also shared her bestselling book, My Skin, Your Skin, illustrated by Onyinye Iwu.

Laura also participated in a question-and-answer session with the children, sharing how a book is published. The children learnt key terms such as author, illustrator, agent and editor and Laura invited the children to write, draw and make marks about their visit to the library.

The community library currently operates on money received through fundraising. Grenada Community Library is currently the only dedicated children’s public library in the south of the island.

Laura Henry-Allain MBE writes:

“I’d like to offer a heartfelt thank you to the Grenada Community Library for inviting me. I thoroughly enjoyed the story-time session with the children from St George’s and St Louis schools.

“It was a pleasure to hear the children being so passionate about reading and the library.

“Reading shouldn’t be out of reach for children. It is extremely important that every child can experience the magic of libraries and books, and is given every opportunity to develop a lifelong love of reading.

“Even though we have the internet and children can use electronic devices, nothing beats the sensory awareness of a paper book for children to escape into.

“I sincerely hope that the library continues to flourish!”

Magdalena Fielden, Chairperson of the Grenada Community Library writes:

“We were thrilled to host Laura Henry-Allain MBE at the Grenada Community Library. She shared an inspirational storytelling session with a group of primary school children from St George’s and St Louis.

“The pupils loved hearing all about JoJo and Gran Gran, and we look forward to welcoming Laura back to the library again very soon.”
