50th Year of Independence Celebration at the Grenada Community Library

On Friday 9th February, I had the honour of being invited to the Grenada Community Library in my role as patron for Grenada’s  50th anniversary of independence celebration.

It was an honour to meet Senator the Hon. Claudette Joseph and British High Commissioner Mr Victor Clark. We were treated to readings by outstanding Grenadian authors Alyssa Bierzynski, David Ambrose, Tamika Phillip and Sherry Hamlet.

I was very impressed with the students from AHS and St George’s Anglican Senior and Junior school. They listened attentively to the stories and asked me intelligent questions. We were treated to a magical story session by Mr DeGale, the school’s principal, as well as a musical steel pan performance by Nigel John.

I was delighted to see the donations from Community Play Things, Norland College, Northwood College, Macmillan Books, Hachette Books, Ladybird Books and Penguin Books being made good use of. I was able to donate more books, especially new titles from Kelechi Okafor and David McQueen.

Well done to the staff Michelle, Melissa the and Emon for their tireless work.

A very big thank you to Stacey Byer and Mags Fielden and the other trustees for all they do in making sure the library remains the heartbeat of the community.

I am a big supporter of libraries and I strongly believe that every child, irrespective of their background, must have access to a library. Books are the gateway to fostering a child’s love of literacy and helping their holistic learning.

It was refreshing to hear the government has made a promise to provide support to the Community Library.
