Notable Black British Children's Authors
My Words My Book
Every year, as part of Black History Month, libraries, schools and Early Years settings celebrate the lives and achievements of Black people. Often, largely because of resources that are readily available to download online, there is a focus on individuals from the USA. Although these stories are indeed important and should be recognised, there is so much that we still need to learn about Black Britons who have made a significant impact in the UK, which is British history.
Indeed, we can celebrate everyone: Black History Month in the USA is in February, in the UK it is in October.
We are mindful that when lists are created on Britons from the arts and the creative community, there has been a tendency in the past to overlook children’s authors.
Over the summer, we determined that this year will be different and we created a list of Black British children’s authors in an attempt to address the balance. It’s important to note this list is not exhaustive and is intended to start a conversation around notable Black Britons from all walks of life, not just in children’s books.
And we don’t need to wait until Black History Month each October. We can reference Black Britons throughout the year; there are many individuals whose contributions to life in Britain and beyond are perfect for discussion and learning points across the curriculum.
Let’s keep the conversation going: please feel free to add other Black British children’s authors who have made an impact through their work. .
